I would like to take this opportunity to extend an especially warm welcome to distinguised speaker, Dr. Rahmi Oruc, who had travel far to be with us tonight.

He is an PhD in Civilizational Studies in Ibn Haldun University with concentrations on Argumentation, Reasonableness, and Adab al-Baht wa al-Munazhara.

The Topic for the International Special Lecture tonight: Reviving Munazhara: The Adab Project.

I believe, all of us agree that Islam is beautiful. Islam guide us to be a good man, to be a person with adab.

According to Syed M. Naquib al-Attas, represents the Muslim ideal of the virtuous and harmonious life of a person who truly knows the proper place of him/herself in relation to God and other fellow creatures, and who, as a result, behaves properly and acts justly towards others and towards oneself.

Prof. Wan explain that person of adab will be able to deal with various levels of realities in the right and proper manner because adab inculcates in him a sense of order and discipline in the mind which will naturally be reflected in all personal, social, and cultural dealings and expressions.

Islam then guide us the art of educate, the art of dakwah, the art of speech and even the art of debate, discussion and disputation. Allah SWT said in Surah An-Nahl [16] verse 125:

ادْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ

Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.

Anyway, disputation has been recognized as one of important academic tools in Islamic Education.

The science of this topic has its roots in the earlier sciences of logic (mantiq) and dialectic (jadal) which create the sciences of Kalam and Ushul Fiqh.

Since beginning, disputation practice emerged in connection with both the intrareligious and interreligious debates involving theologians, jurists, linguists and Muslim thinkers.

An Ottoman Great Scholar, Abu al-Khayr ‘Iṣām al-Dīn Aḥmad ibn Muṣṭafā ibn Khalīl Ṭāshkubrīzādah (Ṭaşköprüzāde), Turkish Scholar who died  1561 M, wrote his treatise on this matter called ādāb al-baḥth wa al-munāẓarah.

The phrase ādāb al-baḥth wa al-munāẓarah was apparently invented by Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Ashraf al Ḥusaynī al-Samarqandī (d. after 690/1291) who made it the title of his pioneering treatise.

Dr. Rahmi Oruc will talk deeper on this topic. I wish you all enjoy the discussion tonight.

We also invite you to join our INSIST Saturday Morning Class, every week, from 9-12 A.M in the morning. Thank you very much for your attending.
